CHICO BUARQUE - Brazilian singer and composer

Francisco Buarque de Hollanda was born in June 19, 1944 in Rio de Janeiro.
He is a Brazilian singer, composer, dramatist and writer and his main styles are samba, mpb and bossa nova.

Chico, who is popular in Brazil, Portugal, México, Spain, France and United States, has a musical style that shows Brazil’s social, economic and cultural reality. His father was a famous sociologist, Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, and his uncle was the creator of Aurelio´s dictionary, Aurélio Buarque de Hollanda.

Chico Buarque spent part of his adolescence in Italy and when he returned to Brazil he began to compose the first bossa nova songs. He was 21 years old when he recorded the single “Pedro Pedreiro” and then he became famous.
Although there were others singers with him: Edu Lôbo, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Gilberto Gil, Nara Leão and Os Mutantes, Chico composed songs that criticized the Military Government installed in Brazil. So, he was arrested and exiled in Italy.

Despite the oppression by Brazilian government, Chico helped filmmakers, playwriters, and musicians in many protests against the dictatorship, when he came back (during the 1970s an 1980s).
Even though Chico still writes songs, he also writes books; one of them called “Budapeste” that received the “Prêmio Jabuti”.

His famous songs are: “Vai Passar”, “A Banda”, “Apesar de Você”, “Homenagem ao Malandro”, “Teresinha”, “Mulheres de Atenas”, “Roda Viva”, “Samba de Orly”, “Bye Bye Brasil”, “Valsinha”, “Construção”, “Até o Fim” and “Meu Guri”.
