“EVERYDAY” is my favorite song, because I listened this music from High School Musical 2, because I went with my friends to watch it.

On those songs that were there, “EVERYDAY” is the best and the most listened by me. I liked this song because I liked the images, all the characters and the music video.

Brazilian Music

Our music shows how different and big our country is. The most famous rhythms are Samba, Choro, Bossa Nova, Música Popular Brasileira, Samba-reggae, Baião, Forró and Frevo.

- Frevo is a popular kind of music from Pernambucano. It comes from marcha and maxixe. It was “born” in Recife at the end of the 20th century and it is known because of its fast rhythm.

- Different types of music, from Brazil´s northeast, form Forró. The most famous rhythms that form this kind of music are Baião, Coco, Rojão, Quadrilha, Xaxado and Xote.

- Funk Carioca (from Rio de Janeiro) is a kind of dance music, originated and similar to Miami Bass. In Rio, it´s very popular and it isn´t similar to the funk people all over the world are used to.

- The world discovered Nova Bossa in 1963, because of the gratest hit “Garota de Ipanema”, by Antônio Carlos Jobim ,that won four Grammies that year. He was one of the best composers we had. He died on December 08, 1994 in Nova York City.

- Samba is the most important kind of Brazilian music, that had its orign in Africa. Its name is, probably, referred to the African word “semba”, a religious rhythm, which means “umbigada”.

- Choro can be considered as the first urban music that is typically Brazilian. The first groups appeared in 1880, in Rio de Janeiro, especially inside poor neighborhoods.

Ivete Sangalo

Ivete Sangalo was born in Juazeiro, a county area of Bahia state. She started to sing when she was a child. After this, she moved to Salvador when she was 17. She worked as a model, but continued singing.
She sang in bars and performed in concerts in the county area of Bahia and Pernambuco.
In Salvador, she met the producer Jonga Cunha. She started to sing in Banda Eva and they sold four million CD copies. Nowadays, Ivete Sangalo is a solo artist, and has sold over 6.500.000 CDs.
I like her because she sings very well and is a humble woman. She helps her family, and never forgets her old friends.

He was a very good singer.
He was born in Liverpool (10/09/1940), England.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney together formed the rock band "The Beatles", the best rock band between 1957 and 1975.
He lived in Liverpool until 1971, then in New York until his death.
His group was formed by John (vocal, guitar, bass, piano, banjo and pipes), Paul (vocal, guitar and piano), George Harrison (vocal and guitar) and Ringo Star (vocal and drums).
He was married three times.
His wive's names were Cynthia Powell, Yoko Ono and May Pang.
John's children are Julian Lennon, with Cynthia, and Sean Lennon, with Yoko.
John died on Dec/08/1980.

Music

It’s well known that ever since the beginning of the Ages men have tried to create and reproduced sounds. As time passes, some people have concerned about creating musical instruments and others about composing music itself.

This text has three articles, two about music composers. One classic: the famous Antonio Vivaldi; the other, popular: Moacir Santos. The third and last article tells us about the electric guitar and its principles of working.

The great Moacir Santos

At present, if you get a radio, you will only hear the commercial music. The singers, in major times, are the names that are in the magazines, on TV on Monday afternoons. But the Brazilian music is not only this. We have “sertanejo”, “axé” and other things of the same kind. Brazil has great names of good music. The subject of the web project is to try to say about one of them. Moacir Santos was considered a genius for all those who understand about music. He was born in Pernambuco, lived in Rio and moved to the United States in 1960. There, he had a great career, but in Brazil, few people know who he was. Santos played sax, but he wasn’t only a sax player. His job as a music arranger was much appreciated. I want to write about the music that left Brazil to live from the music in another place. Santos died in 2006, a little time after his music arrived to be heard in his country. He was almost 80 years old. People who want to know Moacir Santos can listen to “Ouro Negro” (Negro Gold), a double CD with beautiful compositions of his.

When the first electric guitar was invented, it revolutionized the music and simplified the “life” of the musicians with equipment smaller than the acoustic one. Despite the electric guitar was invented almost seventy years ago, its working principles remain the same until nowadays and will be explained below:

1- The interaction between the strings and the guitar body

When you press a string, a song is heard and it is possible because the string produces a mechanic wave that is resounded on the guitar body, making the characteristic sound of the guitar. This stage is equal of an acoustic guitar, but the acoustic guitar has a louder sound because of the acoustic box of its body. The electric guitar doesn't have an acoustic box because its sound is amplified by an electric way through the pick ups, as it’s shown below.

2- The Pick up

A pick up, basically, consists in a group of magnets covered by coils. In this stage, the mechanic sound wave is converted to electric waves. These are the following stages:
– When electric guitar strings, which must be made of steel and the pick up magnets, get close, a magnetic field is generated.
– When a string is pressed a magnetic field variation happens.
– This magnetic field variation, which has the same draw of the above generated mechanic sound wave, is picked up and induced as electric current by the coils.

3- Output Stage

In almost all electric guitars, the entire pick up coils are connected to a volume and to a tone control that are different stages; after these stages, we have the output connector that will be connected to an amplifier through a cable.

The Beatles

The Beatles are the rock's parents. The member's were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison. The band began to be formed in 1956, when John met Paul and George, and invited them to his band called The Quarrymen. Ringo was just a temporary drummer. In 1961, the name of the band changed to "The Beatles". In 1962, they were hired by EMI and Ringo became the oficial drummer. The young boys with acid humor won the parades of sucess and made a show to the queen of England at the London Palladium.

They became more and more famous. In 1964, they hit the USA. After some years of sucess, they got tired of the fans and the shows. At this time, people started to say that Paul was dead and John was hated by Christians because he said that they were more famous than Jesus Christ (their albuns were burned in public squares). In 1967 they recorded "Sgt. Peppers" and came back to the sucess. Then, they started to control their own business. In 1968 they recorded "The White Album", that led the hippie movement. Ringo started to feel bad in the band and tried to leave the group. John married Yoko Ono, who is responsible for destroying the band. After many fights, Paul went out of the band. This was the end of The Beatles. In 1980, John was killed and in 2001 George died because of a cancer. But Harrison left and incomplete cd, which was finished by Ringo and Paul in tribute. Until today, their songs are a sucess. Never has a band been so important. "We live in a world where we have to hide ourselves to make love, while the violence is made at the light of day".

Blink 182

Blink 182 was formed in 1992 by Mark Hoppus (bass). Tom Delonge (guitar) - both shared the vocals - and Scott Raynor (drums). In the beginning the band was just called Blink, but they had to change their name because an Irish techno band also called Blink threatened to sue them. The guys decided to add the number 182 to the bands name. They say that it was chosen randomly but some people believe that it is the number of times Al Pacino says the word "fuck" in the movie "Scarface".

In 1995, Blink 182 released their first record Cheshire Cat, which contains the song "MM's". Because of its sucess, the band moved to Encinitas, California to record an album with MCA Records. Dude Ranch was released in 1997 and the songs "Josie" and "Dammit" were very famous in USA. A reason for their fame is the fun the lyrics that attract a lot of teenagers' fans. Travis Barker substituted for Scott at the drums. The new drummer helped to increase the quality of the band and the next record became a world success, Eneme of the State. In this album there are many famous hits, such as "What's my age again", "Adam's song" and "All the small things" - their most popular song. At this time, Blink 182 started to appear on MTV frequently and the number of fans rose up.

"Take off your pants and jacket", released in 2001 and "Blink 182", released in 2003, were the next albuns and were responsible for turning the band into one of the most famous band, with fans all round the world who in 2005 had bad news. A fight between their members put an end to the band. In that year "Greatest hits' was released as a tribute to their orphan fans.

What does music symbolize to the people!?

I think that is a great question.

Everybody likes music, everybody listens to music.
Some people listen to music to relax, other to pratice exercises, or other things.
Music is a very important thing for people.

Music is part of our daily life.

For example: Mark loves listening to music while he is running. He says: “It helps me to distract myself so the time goes by faster!”

Rita listens to music when she is very sad because it helps her to cheer up. Many mothers play some music to calm their children down.
Some people use music to say to other people what they can’t express by words.
For example, when a boy wants to tell to “that” gilr that she is the one!

There are many types of music like: rock music, jazz, rpb. We only have to choose. Choose and listen to it!
It also helps us in several situations.

Music is something we need and like so it is also a good therapy for us!

Black Eyed Peas

Biography:
The Black Eyed Peas are an American hip hop group, from Los Angeles, who have lately enjoyed massive international pop success. The group is composed by Wil.I.am, Apl.de.ap, Taboo, and Fergie.

The Black eyed peas, originated with the pair Atbam Klann, school friends of Wil.I.am and Apl.de.ap. In 1992, they signed a contract with the musician Eazy-e´s, and recorded an Album, but in 1995, with the death of the musician, everything was cancelled.
After that, Taboo entered the group, and the name of the band became Black Eyed Peas. In 1997, the group signed a contract with Interscope Records. In one of the shows, they met Fergie, that was invited to sing in one of the songs. The group liked her so much, that they asked her to become part of the Black Eyed Peas permanently.

Bussunda

Cláudio Besserman Vianna, more known as “ Bussunda “, was born on 25/06/1962 in Rio de Janeiro, and died of a heart attack in Germany in 17/06/2006.
Bussunda was married to Angelica Nascimento, with whom he had adopted a daughter. He supported Flamengo, his parents were Luis Guilherme Vianna and Helena Besser an Vianna, and his family was jewish
A acording to his friends, the nickname “ Bussunda ” was created in a camping when he was a teenager.In this camp Claudio was called “ Besserman Sujismundo” after a while this nickname turned to “ Bessermundo ”, and after that, “ Bussunda “.
Bussunda studied journalism at UFRJ, and while he was studying he became journalist of a humorous newspaper named “ Casseta e Popular ”. In 1988 he was called to do the TV program “ TV Pirata “ shown by “ Rede Globo ”. In 1989 “ Casseta e Planeta” started on “ Rede Globo “. Bussunda had been one of the protagonists of this program since 1992, and continued writing to newspapers. Some of the most important character roles he had done were : “ Ronaldo Fenomeno “ and an interpretation of Luis Inacio Lula da Silva.
He died on vacation in Germany, during the soccer World Cup ( 2006 ), of a heart attack.

Mamonas Assassinas

The Mamonas Assassinas was a group formed by Dinho who was the vocal. He was born on 05/03/1971, the bass was Samuel Reoli, who was born on 11/03/1973. On the keybords was Julio Rosec, who was born 04/01/1968, on the drums was Sergio Reoli who has born 30/09/1969, on the guitar was Bento Hinoto who was born in 07/08/1970 they were all from Guarulhos –SP.
The group that started without Dinho was called Utopia and the kind of music was cover. After Dinho got together with the group. Later they realised that the funny songs made more success than the covers.In a certain moment a demo tape was in the hands of a son of a music producer, Joao Augusto, the owner of the EMI. Joao contracted the band in 28/04/1995.
They had very funny songs.Actually they didn’t make one seriours songs all life.
Their famous songs were; “ Sabão cra-cra; Vira-Vira; Pelados em Santos; Robocop Gay; Mundo Animal; Lá vem o alemão; Sábado de Sol;Uma Arlinda Mulher.
They are not alive. They got succesful in less than a year and they sold more than two million copies in less tham eight months.They died in 1996 in a plane crasch in Serra da Cantareira – SP.They were arriving from a show in Brasilia when the plane crashed the mountain, and everbody died.
We chose this group because even ten years after their death, Mamonas Assassinas is still famous and it is impossible not to laugh when listening to their songs.

Ivete Sangalo was born in Juazeiro on May 27th, 1972. She studied at Colegio Essência. She used to sing and play the guitar during the school breaks, them when she was 17 she started singing in bars, later in shows in the countryside of Bahia. She also worked as a model, and then she was invited to play “ Micaretas “ at Morro do Chapeu. There she met the producer Jonga Cunha, who put her to be the singer of the Banda Eva. After some years, she started to sing alone. She was fat, but she had good voice as a child, now, she’s a really pretty and thin woman. Some of her songs are: “Se eu não te amasse tanto assim, Bye Bye Bye Bye, Abalou, Poeira, Festa do Gueto, Vai sacudir-Vai Abalar” , etc.She’s alive and really rich..We like her, because she sings well and has a very good voice. She was married to Davi Moraes and she was considered ono of the sexiest women in 2005.

TOM JOBIM

Tom Jobim was born on January 25th,1927 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When he was a child he used to walk along the squares, ride a bike, swim, fish and fly a kite.

He studied in Mallet Soares in Copacabana and later at Mello e Souza School in Rio de Janeiro. He started studying the piano in 1941 when he was 14 years old. He also learned to play the flute and the guitar. His first song “Incerteza” was recorded in 1953, his first success was in 1954, with the song “Thereza da praia” with his partner Billy Blanco. His most famous songs are “Garota de Ipanema” and “Águas de março”.

Many singers recorded his songs: Nara Leão, Maysa, Nana Caymmi, Elis Regina and others. International singers such as Frank Sinatra recorded his songs “The girl from Ipanema”, “Meditaton”, “If you never come to me”.

He got married with Thereza Hermanny in 1949. They had two children Paulo and Elizabeth. Later he got married again and had more two children Joaõ Francisco and Maria Helena.
He was very famous and successful when he was alive.

He is still very important for the Brazilian popular music because he composed many important and beautiful Bossa Nova songs.

Agenor de Miranda Araújo Neto, known as Cazuza was born on April 4th , 1958 in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil.He studied in Santo inácio dos Padres Jesuítas School and later he studied photography at the University of Berkley.He started singing in 1981 with the band Barão Vermelho,the rehearsals happened in one of the components’house in Rio Comprido.When he was a child he was quiet,lonely and had good behavior.His famous songs are “Exagerado”,”Faz parte do meu show”,”Codinome”,”Beija flor”and many others.
In 1987 Cazuza discovered that he had AIDS.

Looking for the cure Cazuza went to Boston.He died on July 7th,1990.
We like him because he was not ashamed of showing himself openly.
He was a Brazilian poet.We love his songs “Exagerado”,”Codinome” and “Beija flor”.

SKANK

The band was formed in 1991 but only started to play in 1992.

Samuel Rosa, Henrique Portugal,Lilo Zaneti and Haroldo Ferreti are used to listening to the rock of the 60’s since they were children by the influence of their parents.All of them were born,studied and met in Belo Horizonte.

The most important somgs in their carrer are “Garota Nacional,Partida de Futebol,Vou deixar,Resposta and Proibido Fumar”.

They have launched eight CDs so far and they have made a lot of success.The Skank was chosen by us because we didn’t remember Titãs that we kike much more.Our favorite Skank’s song is “Vou deixar” but if we had chosen Titãs, it would be “O Acaso”.

MUTANTES

In the beginning of the 60’s, a little girl called Rite Lee met a famous boy called Sérgio Dias.They were in love and started dating. After some time Arnaldo Dias joined the band and they formed a band called Mutantes, based on a book read by Sérgio Dias. They started playing in some night clubs and pubs and then launched their first long play “O Relógio”. As time passed they became more and more famous. They launched other long plays and started appearing on famous tv programs.

Rita Lee was born in 1947 and Arnaldo Dias in 1948. They were all born in Saõ Paulo. Rita Lee studied at Liceu Pasteur, and Arnaldo and Sérgio at Luis de Camões School.

In the 90’s, Arnaldo was sent to a psychiatric center to be treated, after years of being addicted to drugs. But it was quite difficult and he jumped out of the window.

Before it, in the 80’s Rita Lee and Sérgio Dias argued and finished the band and they started to have a solo carrer.Today Rita Lee is very rich and famous.

Mutantes was an example of a good Brazilian band and we’ll never forget it.Our favorite songs are “ Balada do Louco”,”Ainda vou transar com você” and “Ando meio desligado”.

Milton Nascimento

Milton Nascimento is a talented Brazilian singer famous for his fantastic songs. His musical style is expressed as “Bossa Nova”; a Brazilian type of music derived from jazz.

Milton grew up listening to music. His mother was a music teacher and his father was a radio station owner. His first musical instrument was a harmonica, which was given by his grandmother. She also gave him an accordion, which enchanted him so much, that was the “turning point” for his musical life.

In 1962 Milton recorded his first song “Barulho do Trem” and from that date on he has recorded more than 30 albums. Some of his greatest hits are: “Maria, Maria”, “Canção da América”, “Travessia” and “Coração de Estudante”.

His personal charisma and musical skills turned him a world-famous singer. In 1998 he was awarded with the Grammy of the “Best World Music Album” and in 1991 and 1995 he was also nominated for the Grammy.

He is simply brilliant and that’s why he is one of my favorite singers!

Luiz Gonzaga - Brazilian Composer

Luiz Gonzaga was born in Exu, Pernanbuco, on 13th December of 1929. He was a popular composer. He learned to like music listening to presentations of the “nordestino” musicians in fairs and religious parties. When he lived in the South of Brazil, he did a little of everything. He began to play those good songs from the distant Northeast. He composed two “chamego” – a kind of forró – typical Brazilian music: “Pés de Serra” and “Vira e Mexe”. He knew that the radio was the only place to expand his music, and he chose a program from Ary Barroso. In the show, he played “Vira e Mexe”. He won the first place in a competition with that song. This event opened the way for him to have his first contract in a national record label.

Luiz Gonzaga was the symbol of the music from Northeast of Brazil. He was the first “nordestino” musician and he sang about pain and love of people that didn’t have any “voice”

In many years of race, he has never lost his prestige. His talent deviates attention from the public. When Luis Gonzaga died in 1989, his career was firm and grateful. He reached the award “Shell the Music Popular Brazilian” in 1987. His rough sound crossed barriers and conquested all Brazilian people. He represents the people with simplicity and dignity.

Mamonas Assassinas

The Mamonas Assassinas were one of the greatest success of Brazilian pop music. Their lyrics were funny and the vocal, Dinho, achieved success among young people and children.

They were the first Brazilian group that sold 1,000,000 copies of their first record.

The band was composed by four ‘paulistas’ that lived in Guarulhos. The Mamonas Assassinas were first known with the name Utopia in October 1994. With this name they recorded two songs in Rick Bernardo’s studio. He liked their songs and recorded a tape of the group. Their first album was recorded in that year and in March 1996, they started to think about the next disk, but unfortunately it was never made because a tragic accident on Serra da Cantareira ended up their career and their lives. Up till now, the Mamonas Assassinas is a very important band in Brazilian music and culture, and also, they had amused the whole country.

Cazuza

Cazuza is considered one of the greatest poets of the national rock. Rebelliousness and lyricism took always part of an interesting style.

He was born in Rio de Janeiro on 4th of April in 1958 with the name of Agenor Miranda de Araújo, but he was known as Cazuza by the public. In 1981 he joined the people who would become his partners . He met Roberto Frejat, Dé, Maurício Clays and Gutti Goffi (guitar, short, keyboards and battery, respectively) who were trying to find a vocalist for the band Barão Vermelho. By this time the band did not have their own songs. They played in some theaters having to divulge their work until the producer Ezequiel Days heard a demo . He showed it to Guto Grace Mello, the artistic director of Som Livre and both persuaded Cazuza’s father, João Araújo, to launch his own son. The beginning was humble. A cheap output and a disk recorded in haste that pleased the artistic class. The song "Tudo que houver nessa vida" which led this first work, was recorded afterwards by Caetano Veloso, a very famous Brazilian song writer and singer .

By this time, Cazuza started writing his own lyrics. Besides being an instigating singer, with his confirmed bisexual, rebellious attitude, he was a poet. Most of his lyrics are about suffering and passion. Rhythm as ballads , rocks , blues, and many controversial lyrics caused intense impact. In 1983 the second disk "Barão Vermelho 2" was released and 15 thousand copies were sold . The quality of the repertoire drew people´s attention to the group. The double Cazuza/Frejat was being consolidated, it was when Ney Matogrosso, a national popstar recorded their song "Pro dia nascer feliz“. Success would come later with "Bete Balanço", ordered for being the title song of the film of Lael Rodrigues, and that was recorded in a compact . It was so successful that it was included in the third album, "Maior Abandonado" and this one had around 60 thousand copies sold.

In 1985 Cazuza followed his solo career and released the album "Cazuza" that brought other partnerships besides Frejat, that continued friend and partner) with Ezequiel Snow, Leon and Reinaldo Arias. It was a new phase for Cazuza. His shows were more elaborated and the public recognized his value. However ,he already knew that he had got the Aids virus and he went to Boston, for two months for the handling with AZT. When he returned he recorded "Ideologia", which talks about the perspective of the death and social matters of the country. In the following year he was awarded with the SHARP prize as best pop-rock singer and music. The show "Ideologia", driven by Ney Matogrosso is performed all over the country, is turned into a program in the Net Globe, and is recorded . "Cazuza ao vivo, o tempo não pára" is his greatest success.

It was a national crash when Cazuza was the cover of a weekly magazine as the first public personality to assume it. Perhaps the proximity with the death led him to compose continuously. In 1989 he recorded the double album "Burguesia" that would turn out to be the last recorded musical. Cazuza died at 32 in Rio de Janeiro, in July 7th,1990.

A BRAZILIAN ROCK BAND : J QUEST

There is a good rock band in my country whose name is “J Quest”. They are from Belo Horizonte, a city where country music usually comes from. Four young guys play nice music about love, life, and lost loves. They don´t play heavy metal, they play light rock.
My favorite song is “Best days forever”. When they sing alive they are very energetic and happy .
Their music pleases not only the youngsters, but also the elderly.

Charlie Brown Junior

The story of these “boys ” started when Chorão,one of the integrants of the band, after some small glasses of beer, started singing in a bar in Santos.
Coincidently, someone in the bar was searching for a lead singer for his band “What’s up”.He was so pleased with Chorão’s voice that he invited him to do a test on the following day :“I started singing and singing and the guy told me that I was really good and he was not going to find someone better”, Chorão said.
Being tired of receiving orders and after recording a demo in 1992, Chorão decided to have his own band.
It was then that Marcão (guitar), and Champignon (bass and beat-box) joined the band and Charlie Brown Junior was formed.
Not much later, two integrants left the band and Thiago (guitar), and Bare (drums), took their places. They decided to give this name Charlie Brown Junior because it’s a name of kiosk in Santos where Chorão hit his car into.
Charlie Brown Junior is considered a new generation of musicians!

Charlie Brown Jr.

The group started when Alexander Abrão, a skateboard lover from Santos – SP, went to a party to have fun with his friends. At the party, the leader of a local band had to go to the bathroom and guess who was in front of him and caught the microphone? Alexander ( known as Chorão ). He started singing and everybody got crazy.
It was in 1992 that Chorão joined his friends Marcão and Champignon to form a band. He was enthusiastic about the idea, because they already knew how to play their instruments. They didn’t have a name for the band. It wasn’t necessary to think much to find a good name, since a small accident brought inspiration to them. It was in a car accident in Santos when Chorão hit a coconut tent called Charlie Brown and then the group was called so. The Jr. appeared later because they considered themselves a new generation of musicians like Planet Hemp and Suicidal Tendencies.
After recording a demo in 1992, Chorão along with Marcão (guitar) and Champignon ( bass and beat - box), formed Charlie Brown Jr.. Later on Pelado (drums) joined the band, so one of the best rock bands in Brazil was formed. After some time they were openingshows of great bands such as Titãs and Planet Hemp.
After Tadeu Patolla had produced a demo with the band, a contract was signed and their first cd for Virgin Records was released in 1997. Currently they have released the big hit ‘’Ela vai voltar’’. There is no doubt that Charlie Brown Jr. is the best brazilian rock band.

Skank

Skank is one of the most well succeeded Brazilian pop bands which came up into Brazilian music scenario in the early 80´s.Skank is formed by songwriter guitar player and lead singer Samuel Rosa, drum player Haroldo Ferreti, bass player and second voice Lulo Zaneti , keyboard player and second voice Haroldo. These four guys were born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, where they still live. Skank was one of the first bands to mix traditional musical genres such as calang, forró and baião with pop music. Along greatest hits, we have “É Uma Partida de Futebol”and “Garota Nacional”. “Radiola”, launched in October of 2004, was the first compilation of Skank, which sold about 200 thousand cds. In March, 2006 the band started recording their ninth album, in Belo Horizonte.

Skank

Skank is a pop band which started in Belo Horizonte, where their integrants were born. Energy and harmony were their strong points. Skank is formed by songwriter, guitar player and lead singer Samuel Rosa; drum player Haroldo Ferratti; bass player and second voice Lelo Zaneti; and Keyboard player and second voice Haroldo. They formed one of the most well succeeded Brazilian Pop Bands that come up in the 90' s.
Skank was one of the first band to initially mix traditional musical genres such us calango, forró and bailão into pop music. They also incorporated the jamaican dancehall rythm.
They launched their first album as independent form – but the sucess “Underground” attracted the interest of power Sony Music that inaugurated the Chaps seal in Brazil. Their second disc from 1994 reached up more than one million copies sold an included top hits “Calango” , “Te Ver”.
But the song “Garota Nacional” was a big success in Brazil and lead the Spanish parade during three months. Skank represented Brazil in the album “Allez! Ola! Olé!” the official disc of World Football Cup in 1998. Other great successes were: “Siderado”, “Maquinarama”, “Resposta” e “Pacato Cidadão”, “Tão Seu”.

CIDADE NEGRA

The Brazilian group “Cidade Negra” was formed in Baixada Fluminense, in Rio de janeiro. There are four members in this band: Bino, Da Gama, Toni Garrido and Lazão. They became famous in 1990 with the support of Sony Music. The song “Falar a Verdade” was such a big hit at that time that even nowadays it is still requested in concerts. They were the pioneers of Brazilian reggae music.
Their well-known Jamaican rythm suffered a change along the years and turned into a more varied pop dancing one. Their big hits are: “Pensamento”, “A Sombra da maldade”, “O Erê”, “Firmamento”, “Sábado à Noite”, “A Estrada”, “Eu também quero Beijar”, “Onde Você Mora” and “Girassol”.
They were the only Latin American group to take part in the Sunsplash Festival, in Jamaica, and their songs are played in nightclubs in San Francisco (USA).

GUNS N’ ROSES

This band was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1985, with members of the Hollywood band “Roses” and “L.A. Guns. Initially the band was formed by Axl Rose (vocal and piano), Izzy Stradlin and Tracii Guns (guitar), Duff Mckaegan (bass) and Robbie (drums). After this formation they launched an LP in 1986 “Live like a Suicide”. Tracii and Robbie didn’t show up for the concert so Axl called the guitarist Slash and the drummer Steven Adler to join the band. Then the most known rock band was formed.

This band was known as the most popular and controversial hard rock American band. The album “Appetite for Destruction” (1987) sold more than 20 million copies all over the world and the music “Sweet child o’ mine” was awarded a prize on MTV video.

In 1988 they launched “Gn’r Lies”, a remake of the first LP, with four new songs.

Adler was substituted for Matt Sorum (The Cult) and a little bit later they called Dizzyreed to play the keyboard. After finishing the recording they realized there were materials for more two albuns. “Use Your Illusion I” and “Use your Illusion II”.

In 1993, they launched the album “The Spaghetti Incident”,which was considered the worst . This year the band split up.

In 1999 the band launched the album “Live Era 87 – 93”. This album didn’t have any new song.

Years later, Guns N’ Roses separated. The Guitarist Slash, the bassist Duff and the drummer Matt formed with two other friends a new band called “Ulvet Revolver”.

Axl Rose formed a new Guns N’ Roses with other guys and a CD with the hits of the band was relased in 2004.

Since the album “The Spaghetti Incident?” the group promised to release an album with new songs. The album “Chinese Democracy”is ready, but so far Axl hasn’t released it.

U2 as a political band

U2 is a very famous band, it is an Irich band formed by Bono(vocalist), the Edje, Larry Muller and Adam Clayton.
They use their power as a band known all over the world to fight for peace, for health, for the human rights in a lot of careless countries. Now a days they are fighting against serious disasters in Africa.

Bono Vox was attacked and criticised by people he fought against. So far, a few years he was "forgotten" and did´nt succeed anymore.
Now a days, they are on the top again and their last show "VERTIGO" is a demonstration of how many people of different ages like them.
In Morumbi, they got a big public, a lot of money and they could contribute to the "fome zero" from Lula(brasilian president).

Two Very Diferents Bands

Now we will talk about two very bands diferents , one band plays rock, and the other musics for kids. These bands are Titãs and Kelly Key.
Titãs is a band of rock national, very pop in Brazil, they have 6 components, and Kelly Key is only one person.

The song of Titãs is very interesting, and the Kelly Key’s songs are terrible.
The Titãs plays in the band a long time. The Kely Key is a new sucess. The Kelly Key song’s is very happy and exciting, the kids likes her song.
She’s appear hugly, bad, fat, blond, tall, out of fashion, but the song of Titãs is very good, and very pop.
Kelly Key now is married with a men not famous, but very rich.
Well we told about two bands, now we will compare then, Titãs as so good as Kelly Key, but Kelly Key is most happier than Titãs, Titãs song’s as so noisier as Kelly Key.

Rufio is a band of punk rock and is compund by 4 people: Jon, Clark, Scott and Mike.They will make a show in Sao paulo in my 4 of 2006.

Angra is a heavy metal band from Brazil and is compundby Edu, Kiko, Rafael, Aquiles and a piano player that is inthe band temporarerly. At the beginning Angra was formed by André,Kiko,Rafael,Ricardo, but they argued and divide.
André, Ricardo formed Shaaman with other people and Kiko, Rafael formed Angra with Edu, Aquiles,Felipe.

Rufio's musics are as faster as musics of Angra and the guitarrists of rufio are as good as the guitarrists of Angra. The musics of Rufio are better than the musics of Angra cause it is less heavy.The show of Rufio is nextier than the show oh Angra. Rufio's show is more crownder than Angra's show cause Rufio is an international band.

“Rebelde”

Nationality: Mexican

In 2003, the band “Rebelde” came up inspired in the mexican soup opera with the same name. At Brazil, the big “explosion” of the band happened in 2005, same year of the oppening of the soup opera. The average of age of the components is 20 years. Actually, the band is in USA making their tourne, but they’ve already passed for Central America. There are plans for they come make a tourne here in Brazil, where the band became a national phenomenus. They make much sucess in Mexico and South America. The first CD of the band, in the first month here in Brazil, hit the mark of 100 thousands copys sold. With so much sucess, the presenter Gugu has already confirmed the presence of the band in the show next month, to give them the platinum disk.

Blink 182 is North American the band, with three integrants, Tom Delonge, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker. Known as “pop punk”, with mod in their song.
In 1992, the sister of Mark Hoppus (bass) presented Tom Delong (guitar) and called Scott Raynor (drums), they had formed the band. They were the cover of “The Cure”.

They had made their first shows in San Diego.

Banda Calypso X Barão Vermelho

Banda Calypso is compound by five people, and Barao Vermelho is compound by five people too.

Calypso is a younger band than Barao Vermelho, but is considered better, because have the best CD in Brazil.

Chambinho is the guitar player of Calypso Band, his hair is more beautiful than the others guitar players.

Barao Vermelho have songs older than a lot of bands, include Calypso. But their songs were more fomous ten years ago than Calypso’s song on today.

Cazuza, who is dead, was the vocalist of Barao Vermelho. He was the best brazilian singer. For some people, Calypso is the best band. To others, Barao Vermeho is better.

For example, to Joaquim, Calypso is bst, for me, Barao Vermelho is better.

Chico Buarque

Francisco Buarque de Hollanda, whose father was the famous historian Sergio Buarque de Hollanda, was born in 19/06/1944., in Rio de Janeiro. When he was young, he lived in São Paulo and Rome because of his father’s job. He had always a close contact with many personalities of Brazilian culture, such as Vinicus de Morais, Baden Pawel, and his singer sister Miucha.

He entered the university to study architecture, but he quit in the 3rd year, when he got known by his music.
In 1964, he started to play his own compositions in festivals, starting to become known. His musics “A banda”, “Roda Viva”, “Carolina” and “Sabiá” were very successful. In 1965, he started his performance in teather too, doing the songs for “Morte e Vida Severina”. Then, he wrote “Roda Viva”, “Calabar”, “Gota D’Água” and “A Ópera do Malandro”.
As a writer, he did a book for children, Chapeuzinho Amarelo, and then wrote Estorvo, Benjamin and Budapest, for which one he won the Jabuti prize.
Besides his talent for the teather and books, his biggest talent is music, that’s why he was considered the Brazilian musician of the century! His influence in the MPB can be seen since the 60’s.

He spent some time in Europe, because of the dictatorship, where he improved his skills as composer and, when he came back to Brazil, in 1970, his importance in the society grew. The great music “Apesar de Você” became a hymn for those who were fighting for democracy. At this time, he recorded one of his best albums, Construção.
He is also considerated the man who can best understand the women and write music as one of them. The best example of this talent is “Mulheres de Atenas”.
For his poetry, his melody and the content of his musics, he is seen as one of the best Brazilian musicians and his work is recognized as a masterpiece.

CHICO BUARQUE

Peolple call him the poet of the present time, Chico Buarque or Francisco Buarque de Hollanda was born on June, 14th , 1944. He has a typical gemini personality, communicative, likeable, audacious, corageous and very affectionate. Son of a popular historian Sergio Buarque. That’s why since he was a child he had contact with big personalities of our culture, like Vinícius de Moraes(who became his partner later), Baden Powell and Oscar Castro.

He started his carrier on a school´ s festival in 1964. One year later he put in melody the poem ¨ Morte e Vida Severina ¨ that succeed. In the same time he was working on TV Record,. These two important events made him known in Brazil, mainly because of his music ¨a Banda“ . In the end of 60’s he launched his first LP. After some years he made a partnership with Tom Jobim, which was perfect.

His artistic production suffered a big impact from the censorship of the military regimen in 1968; Chico went to the exile in Italy, where his first daughter, Silvia was born.(He had two more daughters afterwards.)
In 1972 he acted in the filme ¨Quando o Carnaval Chegar¨. Two years later he started writing books.

In 1978 he won the Prêmio Moliere of the best theatrical author of the ¨Ópera do Malandro¨. In the same year he published his first book for children ¨O Chapeuzinho Amarelo¨.

Today he works as composer, interpret, poet and writer. Chico is gradually moving away from music to just dedicate his life to the literature. People say that he knows more about the women spirit/ thoughts than themselves. Women are so deeply that just special ones can understand their feelings, and he can do it.

This group is formed only by tree people, but they are sufficient for good fun. The group is formed by: by Tuca Fernandes (vocal and guitar), Manno Goés (bass) and Beto Espínola (guitar). They have been together for eight years.

Tuca and Beto started playing in a pub, with other artists.Manno played in the same beach as Tuca. They always met in “luais” in Salvador(Bahia).
Until one day they decided to form a trio of reggae, this first band received the name from: ”Jheremias não bate córner”.
The name today is another one, this transition happened because they wanted to leave the old company and for this it was necessary to change the name.
For this period the song that was a hit was Milla-“mil e uma noites de amor com você…”, then it was: Jammil e uma noite.

Now the best hits are: Praiero, É verão, Minha, Estrela, Ê saudade. Their songs are a must in all the shows.

Marisa Monte

I’m going to write about an important Brazilian music singer. Her name is Marisa Monte. She was born in 1967 in Rio de Janeiro. She studied piano when she was a child. When she was a teenager she started to sing and in 1985 she went to Italy to study classical music but she gave up and came back to Brazil and started to sing Brazilian songs with her friends doing shows. In one of the shows she was spotted by an important singer called Nelson Mota who turned into the director of her first show at JazzMania in 1987, Rio de Janeiro. The success came immediately, she had a big public and a lot of critics before her first album and she was considered a promise singer to the Brazilian popular music known as MPB.
In 1988 she did her first album, MM. The second one called More was a success, not just in Brazil but also in the EUA, Japan, Europe and Latin America. After that she became famous. Her third album was with a lot of famous people and then she started to make tours in Brazil and in all the world. She recorded five albums in fifteen years. Her trajectory was made beyond the contact with the public. Every album has a new song that is very different from the other and each one has a beautiful history with a lot of famous singers with her; it’s impossible to find someone who doesn’t like her.

Maroon 5 and Green Day

One of our favorite bands is "Maroon 5".

Four friends from California (Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick) had a band named "Kara's Flowers".

After Adam changed his way of singing and Jesse was in charge of the keyboard, James Valentine (guitar), Mickey Madden (doublebass) and Ryan Dusick (drums) joined the band in Los Angeles with the new name "Maroon 5".

Their first album was "Songs About Jane" and their first hit was "This Love". Their most recent album is "Acoustic".

We like "Maroon 5" because they make romantic songs and they are handsome.

There is another band we like very much.
In 1987, Mike and Billie founded a band called " Sweet Children", and then they founded the band " Green Day" in 1990.

Green Day has three components. They are : Billie Joe Amstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool. The band is from California, in the USA.

Their first album was "39/Smooth" and it was launched in 1990. Their lastest album is "Bullet in a Bible" and the latest songs are " Mrs Jimmy" and "Jesus of Suburbian".

Their style of music is punk rock. We like them because they are the best band of all. They are funny and always look happy. We love their songs "American Idiot", "Jesus of Suburbian" and "Holliday".

Roberto Carlos

Born in Espírito Santo, on 1941, Roberto Carlos always had interest in music. When he was 12 years old, he moved to Niterói with his family and made some friends who were also interested in music, especially rock'n'roll.
In 1957, he formed with some friends, including Tim Maia, the band "Os Sputniks". In the next year he became a member of "The Snakes" with Erasmo Carlos. They recorded some compacts in the end of the 50s and in 1961 they had their first LP "Crazy for you".
In 1965, with Erasmo and Wanderléa, a program called “Jovem Guarda” on Record TV channel would name the movement which influenced that generation.
He was also the star of some movies inspired on The Beatles in the 60s. The first one was "Roberto Carlos em ritmo de aventura", in 1967, followed by "Roberto Carlos e o diamante cor-de-rosa" and "Roberto Carlos a 300Km por hora". In the 70s with the end of the Jovem Guarda movement, he changes his style and becomes a romantic singer and composer.
Since 1961 he has been making Cds every year, but in 1999 he had to interrupt his career because his wife had a mortal disease (cancer). Since then, his Cds have been launched in Christmas´ time.

TROPICALISMO

The 60´s was the time of those famous MPB Festivals made by TV Record channel. Some young artists that had a new verbal and musical language started to show they work. Those youngs artists were Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes and Tom Zé.

The “Tropicalismo” was the last important Cultural movement in Brazil in the end of the 20th century. It started in 1967 with an MBP Festival Record, and the artists that joined the Festival were Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil with the songs: “Domingo no parque” and “Alegria, Alegria”.

The “tropicalistas” had antropofagic ideas of Oswald De Andrade, trying to have a music that mixed a bit of Beatles and Bossa Nova.

Caetano Veloso and Brazilian Popular Music

Caetano Veloso was born in August 7, 1942, in Santo Amaro, Bahia countryside.
He is not only one of the most important Brazilian singers, songwriters and acoustic guitar players, but he is also such a style creator.

Caetano Veloso was one of the “Tropicalia” movement creators, in the early 70’s. During the “Tropicalismo” he had many ambitions and interests in different fields. His idea was to modify the panorama of Brazilian Popular Music in order to bring a new critical vision inside the production of the music.
In 1997 Caetano released his book called “Verdade Tropical” (Tropical Truth) in which he explains “Tropicalia” and the key moments of his life. Right after this he released an album called “Book”.
Caetano Veloso wrote many successful songs like: ‘Alegria, Alegria’, ‘Você é Linda’, ‘Eu sei que vou te amar’; and many others.
Until today Caetano Veloso is a very popular and successful singer and very important to Brazilian Popular Music.

CAZUZA: Poet of a generation

“Cazuza “is a Brazilian word that means scamp. This was why João Araújo started calling his son Cazuza even before he was born. Christened as Agenor Miranda de Araújo Neto, the boy always preferred the nickname, until he found out that Cartola, one of his favourite songwriters, was called Agenor, too.
Cazuza was a quiet and well-behaved child, but he became a rebellious teenager. He started to experience sex, drugs and rock’n’roll, was sometimes arrested , and admitted he was bisexual.
After abandoning college, he started working at the artistic department of his father’s company, Som Livre, as press agent . But that wasn’t what he wanted. It was an acting class that showed him what he really wanted to do: sing. Roberto Frejat, guitar-player; Dé, bass-player; Maurício Barros, keyboards; Guto Goffi, drums; Cazuza, singer. This was the formation of Barão Vermelho, Cazuza’s band. They soon became famous with their rock’n’roll, full of slang, that spoke shamelessly, openly of love, pleasure and pain.

In July of 1985, Cazuza started his solo career. Some months later, he was on the newspapers again. He had been hospitalized in Rio with a 42 ° C fever. Diagnosis: bacterial infection. The result of the HIV test he insisted on taking was negative. But in those days exams weren’t very precise.
After releasing two albums, He discovered he actually had the HIV, and became the first famous Brazilian person who admitted publicly being HIV- positive. In October 1989, after a four-month alternative treatment in São Paulo, Cazuza went to Boston, where he was hospitalized until March of the following year. His health was already extremely delicate and at that stage there was not much that could be done. Thus he died, a little later - on the 7th of July, 1990. The funeral was at the São João Batista cemetery, in Rio de Janeiro. His grave is found close to other stars of Brazilian music like Carmen Miranda, Ary Barroso, Francisco Alves and Clara Nunes.
He was justifiably called the poet of his generation.

Legião Urbana

That band is one of the most successful rock bands in Brazil’s music history. It was created in 1983 and they played until 1996, with the death of its vocalist, Renato Russo.
In Brasília, the band was initially formed by Renato Russo, Marcelo Bonfá (drums), Eduardo Paraná (guitars) and Paulo Paulista (keyboards), but Paraná and Paulista quickly left. Dado-Villa Lobos was replaced by Paraná. In the beginning of 1985, Renato Rocha joined the group as a bass guitarist and they soon recorded their first album, with the hits “Será”, “Ainda é cedo” and “Geração Coca-Cola”.
The second album “Dois” with its powerful lyrics and striking melodies turned the band into a great success especially among teenagers.
After that they recorded many albums like: “Que país é esse?” (1987), “As quatro estações” (1988), “V” (1991), “O descobrimento do Brasil” (1993), “A tempestade” ou “O livro dos dias” (1996), “Uma outra estação” (1997), “Mais do mesmo” (1998) and the TV show “Acústico MTV” (1999).

In November 1995 the band performed its last concert. In December Renato Russo released his second solo album “Equilíbrio distante”, sung in Italian. In following year the band released its last album: “A tempestade”, but with a sad tone, directly connected to Renato’s health .
He died a month later from a still unknown AIDS related illness and they separated.
Despite Russo´s death and the group’s disbanding, Legião Urbana continues to be the third best-selling artist, with approximately 350,000 albums sold per year as of 2003. With more than 13 million records sold, the band continues to be very well-known among young Brazilians. Legião Urbana was, and remains, loved because of the songs whose words talk about love, spiritualism, politics, family, sex and drugs. The raw reality of these issues struck a chord with many, including Russo himself.

Mamonas Assassinas

The group was formed in 1993 by five youngsters, who were happy, humble, extrovert and extremely creative. They invented a new kind of music that portrayed, criticized and mocked by the society in an amusing way dancing and performing on stage. Their music made you feel happy. When they were really achieving success, going to TV shows and selling 50.000 CD’s per day, there was a fatal accident in which all of them died. From that moment on we have missed them so much! The lyrics of “Robocop gay” will be always remembered by their fans.

Thirteen years of success

Skank has been one of the most well succeeded Brazilian bands since the 80’s. Its lead singer, guitar player and also songwriter is Samuel Rosa; the drum player Haroldo Ferreti; bass player and second voice Lelo Zaneti, and keyboard player Henrique Portugual.
These four guys gathered at their homeland Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais where they still live. The band wanted to transfer the Jamaican dance hall atmosphere to Brazilian tradition. Its main influence is reggae and their music became very popular in parties and dance clubs.
Their first record “Skank” was an independent album. The band reached success with its second record named “Calango” and many hits like “Pacato Cidadão”, “Te Ver” and “Jackie Tequila”. But their most famous song is probably "É uma Partida de Futebol" from their album “O Samba Poconé”, a song about the excitement of a soccer match, which is the most popular sport in Brazil.
Skank has already traveled around the world and its record “Cosmotron” won the “Best Brazilian rock album” Latin Grammy of 2003. The band has also achieved success with their last album “Radiola”, from 2004. There is a total of eight records and thirteen years of glory.

Los Hermanos

They are a band that makes art because their music has significant lyrics and the melodies are pleasant to listen to.
Their first successful hit was” Anna Julia” also their first album. Three CD’s have been released so far: “Bloco do eu Sozinho, “Ventura” and “4”.
They are really musicians, who invent chords and are very creative. They have a different, more relaxed style, which can be noticed in their looks with long beards. These people are Marcelo Camelo, Rodrigo Amarante and Barba.

Their music is classified as alternative because they play from parsley to punk.

Skank

Skank was formed in 1991, in Belo Horizonte, the same Brazilian city that gave Milton Nascimento to the world. The group started moving the interest from dancehall Jamaican to the Brazilian tradition pop. They launched their first album in an independent form. In 1994 they launched “Calango” and top-hits as “Jackie Tequila” and “Te Ver”.
Their next CD called “Poconé” took the group to present in France, the United States, Chile, Argentina, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Germany. The single “Garota Nacional” was a monstrous success in Brazil.
They started playing electronic music. The five first months of 2003 had been invested in the preparation of “Cosmotron”, their new CD. The group went on an international tour to Portugal, England and Belgium.
In 2004 they launched “Radiola”.
After “Radiola” they haven’t launched any new CDs.

SIMPLE PLAN

Simple Plan was formed in Canada with Pierre Bouvier (vocal) , Sebastian Letfbre (guitar) , Chuck Comeau (drums), Jeff Sttinco (guitar) and bass ( David Desrosirs).

So far, Simple Plan has released three CDs and one DVD. The CDs are “No pants, No helmans, Just balls”, “I still not getting anything” and “MTV hard rock live” (CD and DVD).

They gave a concert here, in Brazil in 2005 in a football stadium called Morumbi at Mix Festival.

The group was a real success in our country, with their very good sound and beautiful songs.

Jota Quest

Everything began when the bass player PJ and the drummer Paulinho Fonseca joint their black music affinities and decided to create a band. After that, the keyboard player Márcio Buzelin and the guitarist Marco Túlio Lara also joint them.
After some tests and the participation of 13 singers, Rogério Flausino completed the band and they have been maintaining the original formation til today.

Celebrating its ten years of the first CD launch, the band is marking their presence in the Brazilian pop rock. They have already six CDs, millions of shows throughout Brazil and presentations in the USA and, recently, in Europe when they participated of the open party of the Rock in Rio 2006 launch, in Lisbon.

JOTA QUEST

The group Jota Quest is from Minas Gerais, in the southeast of Brazil. It started in 1993, with Paulo Diniz in the bass, and Paulo Fonseca in the drums. Later, Márcio Buzelin in the keyboard and the guitarist Marco Túlio Lara. The lead singer Rogério Flausino is the last one. The name of the group is a tribute to Johnny Quest, the cartoon character .
When they are not recording the Jota Quest goes around some cities and opens shows for groups like the Skank.

“Cazuza”

Cazuza was born on 4 April 1958, in Rio de Janeiro. His father was discloser of the recorder Odeon. His mother was a dressmaker. They were not rich but he studied at an expensive school. Cazuza took a university entrance exam of Communications, only because his father promised to give him a car. But he gave up the course. He started to take drugs. And his father had to get him free from prisons, charged by carriage and usage of drugs. And, in 1976, got a job for him in the recorder “Som Livre”. There, Cazuza was a discloser of artists in the recorder and, after seven months of a photograph course in Bekerley University, it was given some paces as a photographer. But nothing of that satisfied him. Howevwe, thanks to a theater course, Cazuza could find himself. He could sing. It was in the assembly of the play "Pára-quedas do coração” that he had loosened the voice, and he liked it very much.

In 1981 he found himself with the people that would be his companions on the road. He knew Roberto Frejat, Dé, Maurício Clays and Gutti Goffi (guitar, short, keyboards and battery, respectively) who were trying to find a vocalist for the Barão Vermelho band which, at this time, did not have their own work. They got in touch with some theaters, did the difficult work of divulging them until the producer Ezequiel Days heard the demo of the group. He showed it to Guto Grace Mello, artistic director of the Som Livre and they had to convince Cazuza’s father, João Araújo, to throw his own son.

In January 1985, Barão Vermelho had a successful participation in Rock 'n Rio Festival .In July 1985 the band got separated, because there were many misunderstandings. Some days after, Cazuza was sent to hospital with an infection. Afterwards, he started to sing alone and the album "Cazuza", launched in November 1985, inaugurated the individual phase of the singer and a series of partnerships. In October 1987, after an admission in a clinic of Rio de Janeiro, his parents led him to Boston, in the United States.There, he faced two critical months, submitting himself to a medical treatment with AZT.

When he came back, he recorded the disk "Ideologia", where he spoke of his experiences through the perspective of death and also worried with matters related to the social questions of the country. In the following year he won the prize SHARP as the best singer of pop-rock and for best pop-rock music. The show "Ideologia", driven by Ney Matogrosso traveled throughout the country, turned to a program in the Net Globe and was recorded in a disk, "Cazuza ao vivo, o tempo não pára". This disk has sold more than 560 thousand copies and is the record of the greatest success of his career.

He appeared in a weekly magazine assuming that he was with Aids. It was a national crash. He was the first public personality to assume this illness.
In October 1989, after four months following an alternative handling in São Paulo, Cazuza traveled again to Boston, where he stayed in a hospital until March of the following year. His condition already was really delicate and, on that circumstance, there was not much more to do about it. It was when he died, little afterwards – on the 7™ of July 1990. The burial was in the cemetery “São João Batista”, in Rio de Janeiro.

FUNK

In Brazil funk is a popular form of music that has its roots in Miami Bass rap music style. The beats are deep and rapid, and the voice aggro. Funk has its origins in the slum culture of Rio De Janeiro. As the slums are frequently the feared and ignored half of metropolitan Brazil, funk is a reflection of this cultural division. Much like rap and hip hop culture, it is wildly popular yet feared in the United States, funk is viewed as an overly loud, aggressive, sociopathic form of music.
Like any kind of dance music, funk lifts heavily on samples - international rips, as well as rips on previous funk music. Much of the production occurs in small scale studios in Rio, and is distributed through hand-burned CDs in the markets throughout Rio, São Paulo, and Salvador.
The most popular and famous funk singers in Brazil are: Tati Quebra Barraco, Mc Leozinho, Mc Serginho, Mc Marcinho end the DJ Malboro. They’re responsible for the modern hits of funk and their main songs are: Boladona, Se ela dança eu danço, Eguinha pocotó, Glamurosa, which have conquered fans who crowd their.

The artists make the shows wearing funny clothes. They sing, dance, and ask the audience to come on the stage to sing together with them, turning the show into a special event. They have lights, specials effects, a high sound and a great group of dancers. Nowadays the funk has been accepted by high society, mainly the youngsters.

Legendary Rock : “Barão Vermelho”

The Brazilian rock group “Barão Vermelho” was born in 1981, in Rio de Janeiro. Roberto Frejat, Guto Goffi, Dé Palmeira and Maurício Barros had always wanted to play pure rock’n roll, but they didn’t have a vocalist. In 1982, they finally found Cazuza and so the group was completed.

Later this year they recorded their first album “Barão Vermelho” and in 1983, the second one called ““Barão Vermelho 2”. But they just reached success in 1984 with the song "Beth Balanço" and the third album of the band "Maior Abandonado". In January of 1985 they played at the Rock In Rio festival and in July Cazuza left the band to start his solo career.

That was a hard time for the band, but they overcame this difficult as Frejat became the new vocalist and two new members, Fernando Magalhães and Peninha, joined the band. The next few years were the best ones for the band. They released three more albums: “Carnaval”, “Barão ao Vivo”and “Na Calada da Noite” opened the show of Rod Stewart in Brazil and won many awards including the Sharp award for best rock group in 1990 and in 1992.
Just in 1999 they recorded live a new CD called “Balada MTV – Barão Vermelho”. This is a compilation of the best and the most famous songs of their career, including a new song "Enquanto Ela Não Chegar".

In 2001, after playing again in Rock in Rio 3 – for a better world, “Barão Vermelho” made a quick pause and their members did some parallel projects.

In 2004 they came back with the CD “Barão Vermelho”. This album returned to their early ages, with some really rock’n roll hits, such as ‘Cuidado’ and ‘A chave da porta da frente’. And in 2005, they recorded their first DVD, which shows a live performance of the group. It has a special surprise to the fans, the song “Codinome Beija-Flor”, that is sung by Frejat and, virtually, by the former vocalist of the band Cazuza (who passed away in 1990).

After 25 years and with 15 albums released, “Barão Vermelho” remains as one of the best and most popular Brazilian rock bands. “Por você”, “Puro Êxtase”, "O Poeta Está Vivo" are some of the unforgettable hits that gather different generations in the band concerts all over Brazil.

INIMIGOS DA HP

Pagode is a Brazilian style of music which has its origins in Rio de Janeiro. It mixes samba with other African rhythms. Pagode originally meant a celebration with lots of food, music and dance. In 1978 Beth Carvalho was introduced to this music, liked it and recorded tracks by Zeca Pagodinho and others. In the 1990s the music developed to include electronic instruments.
Iimigos da HP is an example of this kind od music. The band is formed by 8 people: Sebá, Alemão, Bonilha, Bruninho, Gui, Tocha, Leo, and Cebola. All of them are engineers except for Cebola, who is a lawyer. In their free time they usually played pagode in bars and they started as a band in May,1999. In order to learn about the instruments and the rhythm they bought a video about pagode.
The chosen name “ Inimigos da HP” is due to use of HP calculators at college. Their first success is “Quer Dizer”.

HARD CORE : the new love

Dead Fish is a Brazilian band that is not so popular. It was founded in Espirito Santo city in Brazil in 1991. The members of the band have been friends since their childhood, and they didn´t know how to play any instrument when they decided to start a band. Before that they used to go skateboarding every day.

In their songs they show their ideals by protesting, talking about the real situation of the world, or about specific revolutions sometimes.
Hard Core is not so popular in Brazil. There are many fans of Dead Fish and of the general Hard Core in Brazil, mainly in the big cities, and this number is growing fastly. But the majority of bands and shows are “underground” and are not usually advertised by the Media . Dead Fish left the “underground life” in 2004 when it signed a contract with the recorder Deckdisc. Although they are not so well known, this is a wonderful bend whose popularity is growing in Brazil.

FOREVER “CHICO”

Francisco Buarque de Hollanda, our “Chico”, is a Brazilian musician, composer and writer.
He became famous because of his lyrics commenting on the social, economic and cultural conditions in Brazil. Many songs from Chico talk about the dictatorship period. By this time, he created a pseudonym to continue composing without being censored: Julinho da Adelaide. With this pseudonym, he composed just three songs.
He is also very famous for his songs which talk about female matters. His lyrics are so beautiful that everyone gets impressed. Among them there are well known ones such as: “Olhos nos olhos”, “Terezinha” and “ Atrás da porta”.
Chico wrote music for the poem “Morte e vida severina” for a scenic paly im 1965. Since this, his presence in Brazilian theater has been constant.
Buarque has a lot of music styles, but his “sambas”are more popular. At present a new CD is being released.

SKANK: THIS IS WHAT POP IS ABOUT

The Brazilian pop group Skank initiated their career in 1991, in Belo Horizonte, influenced by reggae, ska and dube music, and they became the most popular band in Brazil in the 90’s.

Their music has a dancing atmosphere which became extremely popular at discos and parties. The first CD, “Skank”, was independently recorded and released by “Chaos” stamp. The second one, “Calango”, put the band in the market for good with several success hits, such as a "boom-shak-a-laka" version of “É proibido fumar”, released by Roberto Carlos in “Jovem Guarda” time.

“Garota Nacional”, “Pacato Cidadão” and “Tão Seu” are other big hits from the members: Samuel Rosa (lead singer and guitarist), Lelo Zaneti (bass player), Haroldo Ferreti de Souza (drums) and Henrique Portugal (keyboard).

The very beginning:
Ivete Sangalo started her singing career in 1996 in Banda Eva. She was not famous all over Brazil, but in Salvador she was very famous. Now she’s one of the best singers in Brazil. She sings axé, a very popular style of music. Ivete has a strong voice which helps her sing very well.

First Hits:
In 1999 she started her solo career and became a great success all over Brazil. One of the most famous songs of Ivete Sangalo is “Abalou” that is the song which made her famous in the music world. Another big hit of the artist is “Festa” that really made her famous because they played it on the radio, so more people became her fan and contributed to make her even more famous. This song has also been played all around the world. She was nominated to the Grammy in 2000 in the category of, “The Best Solo Pop Album”. Her first album got the double platinum disc with 600 thousands copies sold. She may be considered the most successful pop singer in Brazil.

International career:
Ivete Sangalo is very successful in her international career. She has albuns that are sold in America, Europe and Asia. Wherever she goes, somebody knows her and her music.
Her first concert out of Brazil was in Portugal, when she had completed two years of solo career. Since then, her success grows every day. Besides Portugal, she has played in countries like: Spain, Germany, Italy, England, France, Switzerland, Argentina, United States and Japan.
The singer has more plans. She is going to produce an album with some songs in Spanish and another European tour is being planned.

Why Ivete represents Brazil:
As you can see Ivete is believed to be well-known all over the world. It’s really good for us because Ivete shows them our culture and music, and it makes a good impression on them.
Ivete is very famous but not only because of her music. Many people like her because of her beauty, they say that her legs are the most beautiful in Brazil.

Future:
Ivete doesn’t like to talk about her future too much, when she is asked what she will do, she answers: “live life better, always”. But she admits that she wants to keep working for a long time and really wants to be a mum. She said that having a family is a dream. For the near future, her projects are shows. She has already confirmed her presence in the Rock in Rio- Lisboa Festival, in Portugal on May, 2006.

Like Charlie Brown...

"Charlie Brown Jr" is a rock'n'roll band from Brazil.
They are from Santos, in São Paulo. Their leadsinger is Chorão.
The other guys used to be: Marcão (guitar), Pelado (drums) and Champignon (bass).
But they changed the group in 2005. Only Chorão stayed in the group.
The new members are:

They are very cool because their music is direct and talks about our everyday life.

She was Born on December 10th, 1962, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
She lived in Santarém – Pará , Belo Horizonte – Minas Gerais and Brasília – Distrito Federal. She decided to be a singer when she was 14. She had played accoustic guitar since she was 18. she sang in operas and played the drums in a group of samba.
In 1989 she went to São Paulo and made a demo tape with the song “Por Enquanto”, of Renato Russo.

In 1990, she returned to Rio and was hired by Polygram, a company that produces CD’s. Her first CD was “Cássia Eller” in 1990. She made many shows with the guitar player Victor Biglione. The second was “Marginal” with the song “ETC”. In her third CD she recorded a song “Malandragem” (From Frejat and Cazuza), which was very popular on the radios. In 1996, she launched a CD which was recorded during a show called “Violões”.

In “Veneno Antimonotonia” 1997, she recorded more Cazuza’s songs. In 1999 she recorded “Com Você o meu mundo ficaria mais completo”. Her last CD was “MTV Acústico recorded later on.She liked to sing songs from Renato Russo, Herbert Vianna, Raul Seixas among others.
She died on December 29th, 2001. she was only 39 years old.
We like her because of her own style and her unique voice. She always sang beautiful and modern songs. We think she will never be forgotten.

Pitty

Prscillla Leone, Pitty, was Born on October 7th, 1977 in Salvador, Bahia.
Her father Luiz was a Merchant, and her mother Tina was a housewife. Since she was very young she has always been interested in music. From 10 to 14 years old, she lived im Porto Seguro, Bahia and it was there that she decided to form a band, after she had watched a rock show. In 1998, Pitty and three frieds Liz, Carol and Lala, put a band called “Shes”, where she is the drummer. For her it was one of the funniest periods of her life. They didn’t record any album, but made shows and pictures to advertise her job.

After Pitty met Pedro Inkoma’s guitarist and became their lead singer. Like all bands, they rehearsed in the garage, they played in little parties. The band stayed on the road for five years. With some good material but not her compositions, she went to Rio de Janeiro where she met Rafael a musical producer.

Pitty started to record the album “Admirável Chip Novo”, but she didn’t have a guitarist and bass player. The drummer was Duda(her current boyfriend). Pitty invited Dunga to play bass and Peu to play the guitar. Peu was from the band “Úteros em Fúria”. Then Pitty and his band recorded the first clip and success came up. “máscara” became one of the most requested clips of national music. In 2003, Pitty was a candidate to win VMB (Video Music Brazil), of MTV, but Detonautas won the Prize.after they released another clip “Admirável Chip Novo”, which had the same name of her CD. “Teto de Vidro” was released in São Paulo in October, 2003 and it was the most requested clip of the program Top 20 of MTV.
In 2004, Pitty won the “National Music Multishow Prize”. She dedicated it to the band and to her fan club.

On October 5th, 2004 she won the Prize VMB for the best rock clip with (Equalize). By the end of 2004, she made the clip “Semana Que Vem” that is about the time we loose when we make a mistake of not taking important decisions of our lives.
In 2004, Pitty released the second CD “Anacrônico”, two months later she made the clip ‘Memórias”. Pitty is great and her songs are cool.

Hip hop

Hip Hop appeared in New York city in the streets of Harlem and Bronx. In 1973 New York was declared insolvent city. The quarter of South Bronx was very poor and violent. Nobody had job or paid a rent for living. Several house owners put fire in their buildings to receive the money of insurance. The people still lived there and loved to make parties. In one of these parties “hip hop” was born.
The Hip Hop is a culture composed by the following elements: the rap, the graffiti and the break.
* Rap- the rhythm and poetry, is the verbal music expression of the culture;
* Graffiti – represents the plastic art, expressed by colored drawings made by graffiti artists, in the city streets spread all over the world;
* Break dance – represents the dance

Samba–Rock

Samba-rock is a kind of rock music. Created in the 1960s, it combines the sounds of soul, funk and Brazilian samba. Back at the 70’s samba-rock was a new style of music. This style was invented by Jorge Ben.
Samba-Rock is a modern mixture of samba and rock rhythms, sung mostly in Portuguese. It got popular in Brazil, specially in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, since 2001.
This kind of music is a modern dance, with a mixture of samba and rock steps. This rhythm of samba mixed Black American arrangements, it was a popular dance for a long time in Brazil.

ROCK THE WORLD!

This kind of music started in the EUA, in 1950. Different from everything, rock joined a fast rhythm with a little black music from the south of the USA and the country side. The most important instruments are the electric guitar, the bass and the drums with an innovating movement. With simple lyrics and fast rhythm, it soon pleased people’s taste when it was played in a radio program.

The first hit in Brazil was the famous song “Banho de Lua” in the 60´s. The Jovem Guarda movement launches singers such as Roberto Carlos, Erasmo Carlos and Wanderléa, with romantic lyrics.

In the 1970’s, Raul Seixas and Secos e Molhados arose in the musical scenery. In the next decade other bands were very successful, such as: Ultraje a Rigor, Legião Urbana, Titãs, Barão Vermelho, Kid Abelha, Engenheiros do Hawai, Blitz and Os Paralamas do Sucesso.

The funk has its origin in the EUA in 1970, black music. The funk turned out to soul music too. First the funk was sexy, slow and loose.

From the end of 1950 and the start of 1960, the term funk was used in soul music and was impolite. The funk was a confusion: soul, jazz and R&B. Funk changed because the hip hop and rap influenced the funk.

The funk is a happy and funny rhythm. The Brazilian funk infects with its energy and beat.

Skank

SKANK is one of the most well succeeded Brazilian pop bands which came up into Brazilian music scenery in the early 80’s. Skank is formed by songwriter, guitar player and lead singer Samuel Rosa; drum player Haroldo Ferretti; bass player and second voice Lelo Zaneti; and keyboard player and second voice Haroldo. These four guys were born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, where they still live. Skank was one of the first Brazilian pop bands to initially mix traditional musical styles such as Calango, Forró and Baião into Pop Music. Among greatest hits, it’s worth mention “É Uma Partida de Futebol” (Its A Soccer Match) and “Garota Nacional” (Nationwide Girl). I like this band because they are very good people and I love the kind of song they make.

Mamonas Assassinas

The Mamonas Assassinas is a very famous Brazilian band. They are famous
because of their foul language, songs that don't make any sense and songs
that parody music styles (axé, pop, rock, metal, country music...). One of
their most famous songs is Sabão Crá-Crá. All children around Brazil know
its lyrics, for they are quite simple. They released just a single CD,
though, because they died in a horrible airplane crash after a tour, in
1996. However, before that happened, the band made a tremendous success all around Brazil. The band was formed by five members: Dinho, the lead singer, Bento, the guitarist, Julio Rasec, the keyboardist, Samuel Reoli, the bassist, and Sérgio Reoli, the drummer. The band started without Dinho, doing cover songs for Legião Urbana, Rush, and other bands, but then they got assembled and formed the Mamonas Assassinas on April 28th of 1995.

Simple Plan

Simple Plan is a Canadian band of Pop Rock formed in 1999 in Quebbec. The band "Reset", of which Pierre Bouvier (vocals) and Chuck Comeou (drums) participated. The band became a great success, with the first song in all tops "Shut Up". Later; the band had another fever "Welcome to my life" and now with the song "Perfect". The band is formed by Pierre Bouvier (vocals), Chuck Comeou (drums), David Desrosiers (Boss, Becking vocals), Jeff Stinco (Lead Guitar).

Simple Plan Band released their first CD in 2002 "NO PADS, NO HELMET...JUST BALLS" and their most successful songs are "Perfect” and "I won't be there". The second CD "LIVE IN JAPAN" was released in 2003 and there were no new hits. But the CD that had most hits until today is "STILL NOT GETTING ANY" in 2004 with the song "SHUT UP" and "Welcome to my life". The last CD, "MTV HARD ROCK LIVE", was released in 2005.

After the last 2 years on a big world tour, "Still Getting Any", Simple Plan is taking a break. They have played twice in Brazil, once in Rio de Janeiro, which they loved, and São Paulo, in the Mix Festival. They intend to come back to Brazil after they write new songs.

Because this band basic composed of adolescents, their songs are a summary of the immediate world and anxieties of its adolescents. Just like the Canadian Avril Lavigne, Simple Plan tops the Brazilian charts with their hits.

Canada has always had good bands and the rest of the world is discovering this now. According to the members of the band, it is usually very cold there, so people stay at home, writing songs. For this reason there are a lot of bands there.

Curiosities: when the members of the band are on their own, they prefer to speak French.

System of a Down

Why do people like System of a Down? Some say that their music talks about wrong things in the government, about war in Iraq, about invading a country just for oil, dropping a bomb and killing people, people who are crushed in a prison, the prison system, the government killings, and other bad things but particularly things about the government of the USA. People say that they make loud sounds, but it isn’t heavy metal, this kind of music is great, they make comments like “they say, with their music, things that are really important, not like other groups who only talk about sex.”

System of a Down was formed in 1993 when Serj Tankian the vocalist met Daron Malakian the guitarist in a studio. They realized that they had similar music styles. The result was the band Soil that was later called System of a Down. In Hollywood, Tankian and Malakian visited an Armenian private school, where they met Shavo Odadjian who was asked to be the manager. Rubin`s friend Oseary took Shavo along to the Viper Room in Hollywood. Then they recorded their first album. After 3 years touring and participating in the OzzFest tour, they released the second album "Toxicity" in August 2001.

The first abum of the band was "System of a Down" this cd was very successful, with the hit "sugar" this song was played many times in the American radio station. After the tour, they recorded their second cd, "Toxicity", this cd was in the top of the hit parade in Canada and in Billbord, selling 5 million copies all over the world. This song was the top hit of the American hit parade on September 11 in 2001, because the song "Chop Suey" was forbidden to play on radio stations. The third album was "Steal This Album!" on November 2002, this cd had 4 different covers , each one sold 50 thousand copies. Between 2004 and 2005 they released another album "Mesmerize" this album sold 800 thousand copies in a week all over the world, and the first single was "B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Bombs)"

System of a Down is a band formed in California by Daron Artie Malakian, John William Dolmayan, Serj Adam Tankian and Shavo Robert Odadjian. They are descendents of Armenian, but when did they meet? Serj Tankian (vocalist) and John Dolmayan (drummer) were born in Lebanon.Shavo Odadjian (bass player) was born in Armenia and Daron Malakian (guitarrist) was born in California. They had different favorite music bands: Jaco Pastorious, Slayer, Beatles, Faith No More and Armenian folk songs. By mixing many styles, this couldn`t be normal. The band is against oppression and agression and generally takes a political posture in the lyrics that they write.

Legião Urbana

Renato Russo and Felipe Lemos met each other at a party in Brasilia. After some time they formed a band called “Aborto Elétrico”. With this band they wrote several famous songs like Música Urbana and Que país é esse?. As the first punk band they were very well-known around the city, but Renato wanted more. However, Felipe was not in that hurry. That was when they started fighting and that ended up destroying the band.

In the same year, 1983, Felipe joined “Capital Inicial” and Renato formed “Legião Urbana”.
Legião Urbana has recorded more than twelve CDs each one with at least 500 000 copies. Some even sold more than a million!!!

In 1996, the band leader and singer, Renato Russo, died of AIDS. After that, the band continued playing and making concerts for a while. Nowadays, Legião Urbana don’t play anymore, but their songs are still loved by fans and even by very young people who haven’t had the chance of getting to know Renato when he was still alive.

Curiosities

Skin and bone, with 20 kilos less than the 65 habitual ones, long beard, almost not recognizable, Renato Russo, leader of the Legião Urbana, died at 1h15min on October 11th, after abandoning a fight of six years against AIDS. “He gave up” said his mother.

A few minutes before he died, Renato repeated:

“ Mother, I’m not from here”.

In the last weeks of his life, the musician didn’t eat properly and he was kept away from his friend. He was locked in his apartment in Ipanema just with his father, Renato Manfredini, and a nurse.

He gave up taking a cocktail of drugs that could have kept him alive a bit longer. “ When I drink that cocktail, it’s like I’m eating an alive dog. And the dog eats me inside”, Renato told a friend.

Neighbors had noticed that music, always played in high volume in his apartment, had ceased. And the fans had noticed that the phrase: ‘Legio Omnio Vicint’ (Legiao Urbana is a success, in Latin), printed in all records of the band, was absent in the last compact disc , “ A tempestade”.

The band CHICLETE COM BANANA, formed by Bell Marques, Wadinho Marques, Rey, Waltinho Cruz and Deny, originated from a group called SCORPIUS, that used to perform in parties and graduation balls. In 1980 it was invited to play in the Carnival of that year. CHICLETE COM BANANA is composed of 2 guitarists and 3 percussionists.The first cd “Grito de Guerra” was very successful and the band sold between 750 and 800 thousand copies, receiving 3 platinum records and starting the beginning of the phenomenon.The most famous songs are:”Quero Chiclete”, “Erva Venenosa” and “Não vou chorar” among others.

They were the first band to make some modifications in a trio elétrico. In 1982, they recorded their first album. There isn’t “the most famous song”, because all their songs are great and famous and they don’t have only one music style: they play from forró until rock. They have launched many albums and the newest one is called “Sou chicleteiro” and I think this cd has the best songs of their career. So, I’m writing these things about this band, because I like the songs so much and because they can make everyone happy.

Simple Plan

Simple Plan is a teenager rock group formed by these boys: David Desroisers, Pierr Bouvier, Chuk Comeu, Jeff Stinco and Sebastian Lefebrere. They are from Canada. They are a very popular group in the world and each one plays different instruments: Pierre is a vocalist, David is a vocalist and plays the guitar, Sebastian plays the guitar, Jeff plays the drums and Chuck plays the guitar, too.

David is 25, Pierre is 25, Jeff is 27, Chuck is 26 and Sebastian is 24. David’s favorite food is Japanese food. Pierre, Chuck and Sebastian like it too, but Jeff’s favorite food is tuna fish sandwich.

Every day this group becomes more and more successful and to each album they write many new songs that play in many radio stations in the world. Here are some of their famous songs: Crazy, Welcome to my life, Perfect, When I am with you, I just a kid, Grow up, Addicted, I’d do anything, Jump, Thank you, Everything, Untitled, Shut up and others. Paralamas do sucesso - Brazilian Band

Three young men who had in common the love for rock and reggae / ska, Herbert Vianna, Bi Ribeiro e João Barone, formed the group “Os Paralamas do Sucesso” in the beginning of the 80’s, inspired by sounds of groups like The Police, The Beat and The Specials.

The first LP of the band is “Cinema mudo”, recorded in 1983. This LP has hits like the songs “Vital e sua Moto” and “Patrulha Noturna”. In 1984, the band recorded their second LP called “O paso do lui”, the best hits of this LP were “Óculos” “Ska” and “Meu Erro”. After a break, Paralamas released another LP “Selvagem?” in 1986. This album had social and political criticism and good mood.

The concert of Montreux in 1987 was recorded and became an LP and Video “D”. In 1988 Paralamas had others hits like the songs “O beco”, “Uns dias” and “Quase um segundo” which were recorded in a new LP “Bora Bora”. The following LP “Big Bang” was recorded 1989.

To turn the decade, the trio released the compilation “Arquivo” with their hits of the 80’s. In 1991 they recorded the LP “Os grãos”. It was not successful. In 1994 Paralamas recorded “Severino” in London. After that, the band had two others hits: “nove luas” recorded in 1996 and “Hey Na Na” recorded in 1998.
In 1999 the band fulfilled a dream: the album “MTV Unplugged”. In the end of 2000 the trio recorded the compilation “Arquivo 2”.

On February 4th in 2001, an airplane piloted by Herbert had an accident in Angra do Reis. His wife, Lucy, who was onboard, died. Hebert was rescued and sent to hospital. After 44 days in hospital amid a very large national commotion, Herbert was discharged. The accident brought to Herbert many consequences. He lost his memory for a long time and his legs became paralyzed. Now, he is on a wheelchair and still hasn’t recovered all his memory.

However, nothing got in their way for the music and in 2002 the band had another CD called “Longos Caminhos”, whose repertoire was composed before the Herbert’s accident. Over the last years, Paralamas has recorded two more CD´s: “Uns Dias” in 2004 and “Hoje” in 2005.
Nowadays the band continues touring around the Brazilian territory. Despite the accident, Hebert Viana is the leader of the band, singing and playing the electric guitar. The band is famous in Latin America. They already have one concert scheduled in Venezuela, on May 31st. In São Paulo, their next concert will be at Credicard Hall, on June 27th.

Music in Brazil

Brazil has been through a lot of changes in the music scenario, most of the changes are due to the period such as the dictatorship when certain types of songs were not allowed.
This web project will show some of the main movements. It begins in the 60’s with Jovem Guarda, then we move to the 70’s, where the songs were secret protests against the dictatorship, after that, in the 80’s we have Barão Vermelho, Legião Urbana and Ultraje a Rigor representing the beginning of Brazilian rock and finally we move to the 90’s and the beginning of 2000 when we have Charlie Brown Jr. and CPM to represent nowadays rock in Brazil.

“The Brazilian pop music is born”
Jovem Guarda – 60s
The name “Jovem Guarda” was taken from a Vladmir Lenin's book and became the name of one of the most successful TV programs in 1965. It was hosted by the beginner singers Roberto Carlos, Erasmo Carlos and Wanderleia.

The King – Roberto Carlos
In 1963 Roberto Carlos appeared with “Splish Splash”, a rock song that would become the title of his LP that year. “Parei na Contramão” his next success made room for his biggest success until today, the song “Calhambeque”. With this Roberto Carlos began his kingdom through the music scenario.

Erasmo Carlos – "O Tremendão"
Erasmo Carlos had already experienced music before becoming well-known. It was in the “Renato & Seus Blue Caps” that, in 1962, he released his first LP. In partnership with Roberto Carlos he became, in 64, the name of the label in the ie-ie-ie market. “A Pescaria” and “Você me Acende” are the best examples of his music.

Wanderlea
She released her first LP in 1962, becoming one of the first women in the rock scenario. At the record company she meets Roberto Carlos and Erasmo Carlos, who would become her co-presenters in Jovem Guarda. Her greatest songs were “Pare o Casamento”, “Ternura” and “Prova de Fogo”.

Ronnie Von – The Little Prince
Also a big name in the Jovem Guarda movement, he began singing as a “Beatles” cover in novice shows. His first compact had “You’ve got to hide your love away” and “Meu bem”, a version from “Girl”, both from Lennon and Paul McCartney. His biggest success was “Pequeno Príncipe” by which he was known.

“Music and freedom”
A generation whose only voice was the music - 60s / 70s

Brazil dictatorship
(1964 – 1985) was a period of time when all the power was in military hands. There was no democracy, people had no rights, they couldn’t express themselves and their ideas, and if they didn’t obey these orders they would be censured and some cases tortured. Meanwhile, militaries sold the idea of a successful Brazil.

Music has been always a way for freedom of expression. Through the music we can achieve people in a easy and direct way. During this military government this was not different. People found the music the only way to have some freedom. Artists and musicians took part in the movement “ Diretas já“ (1984) asking for a balanced participation in the government.

During all these years of repression a lot of names came into the music scenario : Geraldo Vandré, Caetano Veloso and Chico Buarque were the most recognized names of strength and love for their country, people and freedom. Record TV channel festivals were a way to sing their songs and protest against the government and the situation.

In the period of dictatorship Geraldo Vandré wrote many protest songs and was considered one of the most important singers of his generation. He was banished from Brazil by military power and as a protest he didn’t appear in public for ten years. He participated in many festivals in the 60s with songs like: “ Disparada ” and
“ Pra não dizer que não falei das flores ” , which is considered, until now, a hymn against repression.

Born in 1942 in Bahia, Caetano Veloso is considered a revolutionary poet and a sentimentalist song writer. During all these years of military power he wrote songs like “London, London” and “Panis et Circensis”. He was arrested and banished from Brazil in 1969 because of his revolutionary ideas. Caetano Veloso is believed to be one of the most important names of MPB.

Also part of this brilliant generation, Chico Buarque, born in 1944 in Rio de Janeiro – Brazil. His interest in music began when he was five. Now, he is considered a genius, a poet, a revolutionary, one of the biggest names in Brazil history. His songs not only have words, but also meaning and expression. When releasing his first album he had problems with dictatorship censure and some of his songs were forbidden. To express his indignation about the government he participated in protests and festivals where he could sing his songs. Chico Buarque was obliged to leave Brazil and had a lot of plays and songs forbidden.

Raul Santos Seixas was born in July 28th, 1945, Salvador, Bahia. It is said that he was both a lunatic and a philosopher. Some people believe that all his messages and work were nothing but nonsense. On the other hand, a bunch of people believe Raul Seixas was one of the greatest philosophers ever. One could say he used to be a very unusual type of thinker, who will never be understood by anyone
By the age of seven, Raul found out in his father's personal library his first passion: Books. That is the reason why he knew a lot about culture and specially about languages. Since then the boy seemed to be lonely and quiet, spending most of his time reading and thinking.

School was something that used to disgust Raul Seixas: “I've nerver learned anything useful at school. Actually I think the only thing I’ve never learned at school was to hate it”, said the musician in 1964. This was the year when the musician joined some friends and started his first project: “Raulzito and the panters”. Despite the first bad impact the band caused into society, they all moved on. In 1967 Raul started to study to prove that school is useless. His theory might have been right: he attempted to a test for Law School, in one of the best universities of Brazil and he passed. As he hated studying, he nerver entered college, but he kept on working with his music.

Raul died in August 21st, 1989, from a heart attack, caused by stomach problems he had been having for more than ten years. His body may not be among us anymore, but his mind, his thoughts, his messages, his feelings, are still alive. Some of his albums such as “Eu nasci há dez mil anos atrás”; “Gita” and “ O Novo Aneon”, nowadays, are still best sellers. Raul Santos Seixas is not just another name, he is a context of philosophy turned into a compilation of words. That definitely is the reason why this thinker is still remembered as one of the most important people Brazil has ever had.

This decade has witnessed by the rise of Brazilian rock, which has been famous since the 70´s. Many bands like “Ultraje a Rigor” and “Ira!” are still playing nowadays. Other bands and singers like “Legião Urbana” and “Renato Russo”, were immortal and are still being played on radio due to the great success among teenagers.

“Ultraje a Rigor” is a band that started in the 80´s, created by Roger Moreira, and in 1983 became a big hit in Brazil with hits like “Inútil” e “Mim Quer Tocar”. In 1985 the band became well known because “Nós Vamos Invadir Sua Praia” album, then they were awarded with gold and diamond album to national rock and more recently they’ve received other prizes like the Brazilian best album.

Barão Vermelho is a Brazilian band that achieved success in 80’s, which was a tough period because Brazil was under the military dictatorship. The band played songs that talked about politics and encouraged the fans to go to the streets and fight a revolution. They didn’t agree with the government and found a way to fight things they didn’t agree in music.
Their vocal, Cazuza, was a very charismatic person but he discovered that he had a very serious disease. Then a very difficult period started for him and for all his fans that watched his war against AIDS. Cazuza tried to fight but there were no more ways. Even being treated in the best hospitals, he couldn’t resist anymore and died in 1990 at 32.

Rock in Rio - the festival

Rock in Rio is the biggest music festival of all times, which happened in Rio de Janeiro- Brazil. It was organized by “Roberto Medina”, who believed the festival could be a major opportunity to get people to build a Better World.
Afterwards, he concluded the country had all the necessary conditions and attributes to be part of the international show business circuit. He realized that while bringing international artists to Brazil, he could also generate jobs and stimulate tourism.

The first time this festival was seen in Brazil was in January, 1985.The Brazilian entrepreneur gathered some of the most famous music stars in the world in a place that he later called City of Rock. The first Rock in Rio festival lasted 10 days and it was amazingly nice. As it was such a success, Roberto decided to promote another one in 1991, as everybody wished it would happen.

On the other hand, the second festival was in a different place, overcoming the main difficulties (the economic panorama was not favorable to this sort of event). It was in the Maracanã stadium, where 700.000 people came around and crowded the place to have fun in a 9-days-party.

In 2001, Medina organized the third festival, which had a specially build scenario for Rock in Rio III and named Rock in Rio For a Better World. But there was something else at stake besides music and entertainment: the festival’s mainstay was then the social role it could play in people’s lives.

What's cool now!
There is no doubt about which kind of sound grew more in the past five years: punk-rock, hardcore, emocore. This is what the youth is listening. Influenced by American bands, such as Green-Day and Blink-182, bands like “CPM22” conquered the young Brazilian hearts with a strong melody and lyrics that talk about brokenhearted people. Wally, Luciano, Japinha and the front man Badauí – CPM22’s members – have achieved success among the young public.

Following the same heavy sound from CPM22, “Charlie Brown Jr. ” presents more political lyrics, mixed with a lot of rap. The band started in Santos, SP, but belongs to the whole Brazilian territory now. Their success is amazing and Chorão, the front man, is considered one of the best lyricists from Brazil.

We can’t forget that we are in Brazil, the land of samba. Mixing samba with rap made of “Marcelo D2”one of the most admired artists in Brazil. He is responsible for bringing samba back to the youngsters’ ears and mind. He’s an example of simplicity and never forgot about his poor background.

Hardcore, rap and samba: this mixture of rhythms fits Brazil, a country where everyone is welcome, no matter the race, economical condition or whatever. This country is a tropical salad of people and sound.

The song and all the CD is a way to tell a history about the war in Iraq. In the first song , Green Day, decided to make a critic to all American people that knew about the war and didn't do anything about it. A movie based on green day"s CD history is being make. It'll probably be finish in 2007.

Simple Plan

My name is Helena, I like many bands and singers, but the band that I like the most is Simple Plan.
I love Simple Plan! The songs are very pretty, like all of them, but my favorite song is “Perfect”.
The band is formed by five people:
Chuck Comeau (drums), David Desrosiers (bass, backing vocals), Jeff Stinco (lead guitar), Pierre Bouvier (vocals), Sebastian Lefebvre (guitar, backing vocals)

My favorite band is Linkin Park.

I like rock, and the songs Faint, Figure 9, From the Inside, Numb and other songs.
My second favorite band is Green Day, one rock band, I like the songs: American Idiot, Wake Me Up When Septembers Ends, Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday, She’s Rebel and Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

And my other favorite bands are: Ramones, Deep Purple, Metallica, Eminem and others. I like singing, Ramones, Linkin Park and Green Day. This is my text of my favorite bands!

Stairway to fame

Led Zeppelin was a British band that influenced a new style of the 70’s rock. The Led Zeppelin is: Jimmy Page (guitar), John Bonham (drums), John Paul Jones (bass and piano) and Robert Plant (vocal).
In 1968 the band Yardbirds finished and Page decided to form a new one with his friend John Paul Jones. They met Robert Plant, who presented John Bonham to them. They formed The New Yardbirds. But this name wasn’t good, The How’s drummer said that Page’s band was heavy, like lead, and could fly, so they called Lead Zeppelin, but they changed to Led Zeppelin so nobody would mispronounce it.

In 1969 the band recorded their first album, named Led Zeppelin, which was financed by Jimmy Page that used the money he had earned with the Yardbirds. This album was a combination of blues and rock and roll, and in England the review wasn’t good. But in United States they were making success, their album was the second more sold, the first was the Beatles. In the same year they recorded the second album, and had a good review in England. The song “Mob Dick” had a fantastic performance of John Bonham in one of the most fantastic drums solo in the world.
In 1970 they stopped the concerts to work on their third album, but it was a failure of sale. In 1971 their fourth album was recorded which had such success, that crazy minds said the band had made a satanic agreement and sold their souls to be famous again. This album included the songs "Black dog” and "Stairway to Heaven”, which is until now the biggest classic of rock. “Stairway to Heaven” was a mixture of acoustic music and heavy rock.

In 1973 Led Zeppelin released the new album named "Houses Of the Holly” showing all the tendency of their songs. In 1974 they released they own publishing, named Swan Song Records. In 1975 they released their first double album “Physical Graffiti” by “Swan Song”. This album included the song that they did not recorded of the left three previous albums; it had a good review by fans. Led Zeppelin was considered the best band of rock in the world. In 1976 the album “Presence” proved that Led Zeppelin wasn’t in a good period. The rock was changing and the punk rock appeared.
In 1978 the album “In through the out Door” proved that Led Zeppelin continued being the best band in the world. The drummer John Bonham died alone in his room suffocated with his own vomit after drinking a lot of alcoholic drinks. His death finished with Led Zeppelin, the others couldn’t imagine the band without John Bonham. In 1982 was recorded an album with their old songs named “Coda”. The ex-members of Led Zeppelin have been devoted in parallel projects.

Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson was born in the north of Oahu, in Hawaii.
He started to play guitar when he was fourteen years old. The first song that he learned to play was “One" of Metalica and "Frank and Albert" of Cat Stevens.
He loves surf and some Jack’s songs are inspired in surf. His favorite films are The Seedling, Litmus, Filthy Habbits, Blazing Boards, Bunyip Dreaming, Green Iguana, and Endless Summer.
His music is very good and brings peace. Nick Drake, Beatles, Hendrix, Trible Called Quest, Dylan, Ben Harper, Radiohead, G. Love and Special Sauce, Otis Redding, Neil Young, Bob Marley, Kurosawa and Tom are his inspiration.
Before being a singer, he was commentator of films about surf until in 2001 Jack recorded his first CD, Brushfire Fairytales.
The most recent Compact disc of Jack, On and On, was recorded this year.
Jack came to Brazil in April and made his first show here.
He is a very good singer and I love his music, like: Flake, Better Together, Dreams by Dreams, On and On, Times Like These and others.

Marcelo D2 started in 1995 in the “Planet Hemp” with his first CD “Eu tiro é onda”.
He was influnced by David Corcos, Carlos Bess, Mário Caldato,and João Donato, and the music he plays is called “Hip-Hop”, which is really wicked... Other CDs he has recorded are “A procura da patida perfeita (2003)”, “A invasão do sagaz homem fumaça (2000)”
Marcelo D2 in partnership with his friend Skunk were the leaders of “Planet Hemp”, but Skunk died and now D2 is pursuing a solo career.

From “micareta” to solo career , Ivete is ours!
At school Ivete Sangalo used her free time to play the guitar. She moved to Salvador at the age of 17 to work as a model, but she surrended to music, which had always been her passion.
She participated in “micaretas” in Morro do Chapeu, where she met Jorge Cunha, the producer who created the EVA carnival group. With the band there were many successes but in 1999 she started her solo career with her first solo CD “Ivete Sangalo”. Since then she has been taking part in shows and campaigns, and has also launched other Cds and DVDs. “As Super Novas” had the historical mark of 500.000 sold copies in advance.
In 2005 she was awarded with the Grammy Latino for the best record of Foreign Root. Nowadays ,Ivete has also become the star of TV commercials and governmental prevention campaigns.She is very charismatic.

“The Titãs” forever !
In the end of the 70´s, a musical event “A idade da pedra jovem ” showed new talents like Sérgio Brito, Arnaldo Antunes, Paulo Miklos, Marcelo Fromer, Nando Reis, Ciro Pessoa and Tony Bellotto, who formed the Titãs group. Their first official presentation was in October 15, 1982 in Sesc Pompéia. Later Branco Mello and André Jung joined the group and with nine members on stage they really drew the attention of people due to their creative lyrics.
They´ve been to international festivals and they were the first Brazilian band to perform in The Night of Rock, in Montreu , with great success. Currently some of their famous songs are “Cegos do castelo”, “Marvin” and “Epitáfios”.

INIMIGOS DA HP
They are eight friends who studied together at a college in São Paulo and used to meet to play and talk about current affairs. They went to a music school and started to play “pagode” in 1999.
The band was called “Inimigos da HP” because five of them are engineers, one is an advertising manager, one is a designer and one is a lawyer, and most of them worked with HP calculators. They recorded the first CD in 2001, and in 2004 they recorded their DVD and second Cd in “Tom Brasil” concert hall in Vila Olímpia.
They have re-recorded some old “axé’, “samba” and pop songs and they usually play in Brazilian discos. “Alemão”, “Sebá”, Bonilha, Bruninho, Gui , “Tocha”, Leo and “Cebola” are the friendly “Inimigos”.

O RAPPA
Born in 1994 , this band is formed by the vocal and guitarrist Falcão, Yuka, who plays the drums, Lobato in the keyboard, Lauro Farias playing the bass and “Xandão, who is the other guitarist.
Many other musicians have already been part of this band, whose best DVD, MTV Acoustic, was released in 2005. They have been playing the same type of music since 1994 and they have never had an argument.

Racionais Mc's - a Rap Group

One of the most important groups of rap in Brazil, is the "Racionais Mc’s", the members of this group are:
Mano Brown, Ice Blue, Edy Rock and KL Jay and they were born in the end of 80’s.

Their first record was in 1988, in the collection “Consciência Black”, two years later they recorded their first album solo “Holocausto Urbano”, this album made them very famous. In 1991 they opened one show for the rap group Public Enemy.
In 1992, they started one work for poor communities of the slums, giving lectures in the schools and talking about drugs and police violence, racism and other topics.
The songs of "Racionais Mc’s" talk about mostly about discrimination and misery, using dialects, and the more constant topic is policial violence.
In the time of one of their shows in 1994, they were arrested by the police because of incitation of violence.

The album “Sobrevivendo no Inferno” made the group go to the top, with the mark of 500.000 sold copies.

Some songs of Racionais Mc’s are: “Vida Loka 1 e 2”, “Nego Drama”, “Diário de um detento”, “A vida é desafio”, “Jesus Choro”, “Artigo 157”, “Capitulo 4 Versículo 3”, etc.
